Blue Man Group DVD Review: Expect the Unexpected
If you’ve never seen a Blue Man Group performance, don’t try to figure it out. You
simply won’t be able to understand what it’s all about until you experience their wildly creative and
colorful show first-hand. The bad news is that Blue Man Group tickets can be hard to find, and some of them
can be quite expensive. The good news, however, is that they’ve released a new live Blue Man Group DVD,
How To Be A Megastar Live! to follow their 2003 release, The Complex Rock Tour Live. So, instead of shelling out big bucks for live
tickets, you can now experience the group’s psychedelic performance from your own living room.
The concept behind the group? It’s simple, really: 3 guys, painted blue and dressed in
black, doing a bunch of weird, colorful, noisy things in a format vaguely similar to a rock concert. And when
you get down to it, it is sort of like a rock concert, and the Blue Man Group are among our country’s most
interesting and provocative rock stars.
In case you’re not aware, the Blue Man Group started in the early 1990s in lower
Manhattan’s art theater scene. The show started out as a series of riffs on both pop-culture and high art,
with a heavy dose of Dadaism. For whatever reason, it struck a chord with people, and within a year or two of
the group’s formation they were already winning numerous New York theater awards.
Since then, they’ve grown into what you’ll see on
the Blue Man Group DVD. They’ve lost some of the pretention of their early performances and replaced it with an
all-encompassing populism that makes the show enjoyable for artsy people, action movie fans, and kids alike.
It’s not easy to explain why this group is so popular, as they are a truly unique phenomenon, but this
crowd-pleasing spirit probably has something to do with it.
The Blue Man Group DVD brings to life everything that fans of the show have come to
expect: Loud, percussive music played by a live backing band; colorful projections on a giant screen; and a
series of wild and thought-provoking dances/skits relating to the how-to-a-rock-star theme of the
show.
I was lucky enough to see the Blue Man Group live in Boston in 2008, so I can say with
certainty that this comes as close to capturing the live experience as a Blue Man Group DVD can. In a way,
it’s even better. When you go to see a live show, you only get the perspective from your seat, and if you
don’t have good seats, you’re out of luck. The DVD, however, shows the action from multiple angles and up
close, so that you pick up on things that you don’t notice in the live show.
Of course, when it comes to things like this, you do kind of have to be there to
experience the real energy of the show. But this Blue Man Group DVD is the next best thing to being
there.
